Management and Leadership
We use the following best management practices:
bullet Environment Policy Statement:
bulletEnvironmental Team: The Maryland Park Service is but one unit within the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Every unit in our agency acts on daily basis, both collectively and individually, to preserve, protect, restore, and enhance our environment for this and future generations.
bulletSet Annual Goals: The Department of Natural Resources leads Maryland in securing a sustainable future for our environment, society, and economy by preserving, protecting, restoring, and enhancing the State’s natural resources. Our agency conducts multiple internal audits on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis to ensure we meet our goal.
bulletList of our environmentally friendly products and services: Our unit strives to purchase environmentally friendly products whenever and wherever possible. Such products include toilet paper, paper towels, flatware, and biodegradable bags.
bulletEnvironmental Restoration or Community Environmental Projects: Maryland State Parks are community leaders in environmental stewardship. We frequently host restoration projects for all manner of groups and both collectively and independently conduct projects such as stream/river clean-up, invasive plant removal, trash removal, tree plantings, habitat creation, and the installation and maintenance of sustainable day use areas and trails. We also host and/or provide multiple environmental education programs to schools, community groups, and the general public.

Our Innovative Ideas and Specifics in Waste Reduction:

We require that all trash and recyclable materials be taken home with our "day-use" patrons. We have adopted this policy to keep our parks beautiful and to reduce our impact upon the natural world. The Maryland Park Service strongly encourages the sorting and proper disposal of waste and recyclable materials and provides biodegradable bags for patron convenience.

Measurable Results
Maryland State Parks tracks overall fuel and energy usage for all of the parks. From fiscal year 2012 to 2013, the following reductions in environmental impacts were realized: (1) Gasoline - Reduction of 28,489 gallons used, a 12% reduction; (2) Diesel - Reduction of 16,434 gallons used, a 37% reduction; and, (3) Energy - Reduction of 654,000 kWh used, a 7.9% reduction.
