Before Oriole legend and Aberdeen native Cal Ripken Jr. opened Ripken Stadium, Aberdeen was known more for ordnance testing at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.
The Ironbirds, a minor-league affiliate of the Orioles, play at Ripken Stadium, which also hosts the Cal Ripken World Series, an international baseball classic for 11-12 year-olds in August.
Aberdeen is about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore, just off I-95, in Harford County, the "Gateway to the Chesapeake Bay."
