           Have the winter doldrums set in?  Escape them with a cup of steaming tea at one of Maryland’s many tea rooms. Catch up with friends at an afternoon high tea, spend quality time with Mom or throw a tea party with your Red Hat Society group.

          Once overtaken in popularity by coffee, tea has recently gained recognition in American society not only for its health benefits, but also for the atmosphere it creates. In fact, tea is now the world’s second most consumed beverage. (Water is in first place.)

The sites listed below are only a sampling of Maryland’s numerous tea rooms and attractions with tea events. Call ahead for details about days, hours of operation and special events. Please note that in many cases, reservations are required.

          Billed as the nation’s largest all-organic tea shop, visitors can chose from an exotic variety of more than 100 certified organic teas shipped in from ports around the world. They are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

          The shop has several different teas ready for visitors to taste accompanied by tasty treats. Enjoy tea every Saturday from Noon until 4 p.m. At various times throughout the year, the East West Tea Emporium holds educational sessions to help tea lovers explore the world of tea and discover their personal favorites. The classes are led by a tea professional with a Level III certification from the Specialty Tea Institute of the United States.  

Reynolds Tea Room

          Located in a historic 1747 building, Reynolds Tea Room offers afternoon tea and lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosting guests since 1747, Reynolds Tavern is the oldest tavern in Annapolis and one of the oldest in the nation. Their traditional afternoon teas have been compared to the finest in England. All of their cakes, pastries and savory dishes are cooked exclusively on the premises.

          Located in the quaint West Annapolis shopping district, Tara’s hosts elegant children’s tea parties, complete with costumes. After tea, browse Tara’s upscale gift shop for the perfect souvenir. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

The Wild Orchid

          Enjoy afternoon tea on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. in this contemporary American restaurant located in a circa 1912 bungalow in the Eastport neighborhood. The Wild Orchid strives “to create beautiful and long lasting memories for our guests and clients” thus ensuring a relaxing experience.

          Delight in Mrs. McKinnon’s Scottish afternoon tea in a funky pub atmosphere. Bertha’s bakes three savory items, and serves assorted desserts, tarts and scones with creamy butter, jams and homemade whipped cream. Brighton ’s at Harbor Court Hotel

          The Intercontinental harbor Court hotel combines gracious elegance with modern amenities, all overlooking Baltimore’s famed Inner Harbor. Sun-filled Brighton’s Orangerie serves afternoon tea on Friday and Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. in a casual atmosphere.  

Evergreen House Museum

            Luxuriate in an afternoon tea and tour of the historic Evergreen House, an impressive Italianate home built for the Garrett family, founders of the B&O Railroad. The mansion features unique collections, extensive gardens and elaborate architecture from the Gilded Age. Tea is offered Tuesday through Thursday for groups as small as 15 or as large as 45. The tour begins at 1 p.m. and is followed by tea until 4 p.m.

Their light fare menu boasts hearty sandwiches, plentiful entrée salads, home made soup, and delicious home made desserts .  Tea is served Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

          Voted best teashop by Baltimore Magazine and best tea house by City Paper, Teavolve brings the “tea lounge” concept to Baltimore. Teavolve is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Afternoon tea is also available on Saturday and Sunday with a reservation.

Gypsy’s Tea Room

          The tea room is located in the historic Winchester Country Inn. Savor various tea types and selections in one of their four unique rooms or outside – weather permitting. Browse their store for fine china, tea and tea accessories. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

          One of Howard County’s largest historic buildings, Oakland was constructed in 1811 by Maryland Delegate Charles Sterrett Ridgely as a country home to supplement his Baltimore town home.  A two-course tea is served in Oakland’s relaxed and elegant style. Afternoon tea is held on the last Thursday of every month from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

          Located on the grounds of the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park, the beautifully restored Mt. Ida Visitor Center serves a Victorian tea twice a year accompanied by 19th-century music and fashion show. Call for schedule.  

Tea on the Tiber

          A recreation of an English tea room of the 1850s, this charming establishment overlooks the Tiber River in historic Ellicott City. Tea and foods are served in the traditional English manner. Afternoon tea is offered Tuesday through Saturday, twice daily from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

The Crossing offers a variety of tea themes for added culinary and cultural interest, including such favorites as “Mardi Gras”, “Death by Chocolate” and “Harvest Tea”.           This beautiful, historic 1840’s farmhouse bed & breakfast, in historic St. Mary’s City, features a fine dining restaurant.  Breakfast and afternoon tea are offered to guests. Metropolitan Tea Company loose teas are available.  Formal teas are offered to the public several times throughout the year.  Tea by request is available for groups of 20 or more.
