Maryland Highlights Its Tea Rooms


           Have the winter doldrums set in?  Escape them with a cup of steaming tea at one of Maryland’s many tea rooms. Catch up with friends at an afternoon high tea, spend quality time with Mom or throw a tea party with your Red Hat Society group.   

Need further incentive? January is National Hot Tea Month so find a tea room or tea event close to you and celebrate the soothing (and some say healing properties) of a cup of hot tea.

The sites listed below are only a sampling of Maryland’s numerous tea rooms, attractions, restaurants and B&B’s with scheduled tea events. Call ahead for details about days, hours of operation and special events. Please note that in many cases, reservations are required.

Capital Teas

          Capital Teas is located in historic downtown Annapolis in a building that is reminiscent of an old English tea shop that might be found in the South Kensington or Chelsea areas of London. Owner Manelle Martino’s family has been involved in the tea trade for five generations. Capital Teas sources the more than 100 loose teas that it sells from the world’s finest growing countries and regions, including Sri Lanka, China, Japan, South Africa, and Kenya. The store’s fruit and herbal infusions and many of its blended Rooibos teas are crafted in Germany. Capital Teas is open Mondays through Thursdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Capital Teas has two pots of different teas brewing every day. Stop by and enjoy a cup on the house.  

 East West Tea Emporium

          The shop has several different teas ready for visitors to taste accompanied by tasty treats. Enjoy tea every Saturday from Noon until 4 p.m. At various times throughout the year, the East West Tea Emporium holds educational sessions to help tea lovers explore the world of tea and discover their personal favorites. The classes are led by a tea professional with a Level III certification from the Specialty Tea Institute of the United States. 

Reynolds Tavern Tea Room

          Located in a historic 1747 building, Reynolds offers afternoon tea and lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also serves dinner Wednesdays through Sundays from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Hosting guests since 1747, Reynolds Tavern is the oldest tavern in Annapolis and one of the oldest in the nation. Their traditional afternoon teas have been compared to the finest in England. All of their cakes, pastries and savory dishes are cooked exclusively on the premises. 

Tara’s Gifts & Parties of Distinction

          Located in the quaint West Annapolis shopping district, Tara’s hosts elegant children’s tea parties, complete with costumes. After tea, browse Tara’s upscale gift shop for the perfect souvenir. The gift shop also carries a large selection of Red Hat Society items. Hours are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 12 noon to 4 p.m. and closed Monday. 

Willow Oak Flower & Herb Farm

          Visit this small family farm dedicated to plants and herbs and stroll through any of the 17 theme gardens before or after one of the scheduled teas catered by the chefs at Elkridge Furnace Inn. Tea events are held in either the garden cabin or the pond-side gazebo. Price includes tea sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, jam, quiche, two desserts and 3 pots of tea. 



Brightons at Harbor Court Hotel

          The Intercontinental Harbor Court Hotel combines gracious elegance with modern amenities overlooking Baltimore’s famed Inner Harbor. Sun-filled Brightons serves afternoon tea on Friday and Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. with your choice of traditional or royal prix-fixe teas. 

Evergreen House Museum

            Groups may luxuriate in an afternoon tea and tour of the historic Evergreen House, an impressive Italianate home built for the Garrett family, founders of the B&O Railroad. The mansion features unique collections, extensive gardens and elaborate architecture from the Gilded Age. Tea and Tour at Evergreen is offered Tuesday through Friday (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for groups as small as 15 or as large as 45.  

Homewood House Museum

          Groups may enjoy an afternoon tea and tour in this Federal-period house. Designed as a country home, the neoclassical, five-part house depicts the life of a young urban couple in 19th-century Baltimore. Tea and Tour at Homewood is offered Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. 4 p.m.

          Voted best teashop by Baltimore Magazine and best tea house by City Paper, Teavolve brings the “tea lounge” concept to Baltimore with live music and performances Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Traditional afternoon tea is available on Saturday and Sunday with a reservation.           

Thir-Tea-First Street Cafe & Tea Room

          Located in the Charles Village/Homewood neighborhood near Johns Hopkins University, this tea room features a quaint Victorian setting and proudly offers more than 30 varieties of teas from around the world. Tea is served Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Brunch is served Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday by reservation.  



The Casual Cup Tea Room & Gift Shop

The Casual Cup is a friendly, comforting tea house. Owner Wendy Savelle, teams up with Martha Markline and Sweet Stuff, etc. to provide homemade candies and cookies to complement the already delicious offerings of teas, quiche and sandwiches. Open Tuesday through Saturday, The Casual Cup offers a relaxing and refined tea experience for people of every age (including a children’s tea service, complete with PB&J). From the first sip of tea, to that last bite of a homemade scone with lemon curd or clotted crème, The Casual Cup takes pride in its service and attention to the customer. Along with their dine-in services, they offer “Tea Parties to Go,” where their scones, teas and other baked goods can be taken home to enjoy with friends and family.   



Carroll County Farm Museum

          Experience mid 19th-century rural life in this museum that features a farm house, exhibits and original farm structures complete with period artifacts and antiques. Enjoy specialty teas throughout the year in their Victorian Tea Parlor. (Call for days and times.) 

Gypsy’s Tea Room

          This English-style tea room is located in the oldest building in Westminster, built by William Winchester, the town’s founder. Savor various tea types, including organic and fair trade selections, in one of their four unique rooms or outside – weather permitting. Browse their gift shop, Inspirations & the Westminster Gift Basket Company, for fine china, tea and tea accessories. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Ladyfinger’s Tea Room at Freestyle Hair and Body Spa

          Although located in a non-traditional environment, Ladyfinger’s maintains the spirit of a classic British tea room. Traditional afternoon English teas and lunch are made fresh daily with selections titled Otley Tea, Cornish Cream Tea, Harrogate Tea, Scarborough Fair and Westminster High Tea. All menu items are also available for carryout. 24 hours noticed requested for high tea.

Piccadilly’s Tearoom

           Dine in a newly expanded location. This elegant, Victorian tearoom specializes in delicious English afternoon teas and high teas in the evening. Choose from “over 137 premium black, oolong, herbal, organic, flower blossom balls, chai, rooibos, green and white teas.” They are open Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

Sweet Simplici-Tea

          Located in historic downtown Sykesville, among unique shops, this tearoom serves 44 different types of tea, most blended by the owners/sisters Lisa & Robyn. Private parties and off premise deliveries are available. Reservations recommended. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

          Best friends for over twenty years, owners Erin and Janet aim to provide a respite from the work-a-day world at this tea room located in a charming cottage. Choose from 40 varieties of fine loose teas and numerous menu options. Celebrating a very special occasion? Select a unique gift of a cake baked in a teacup; must order in advance. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.



Historic Oakland

          One of Howard County’s largest historic buildings, Oakland was constructed in 1811 by Maryland Delegate Charles Sterrett Ridgely as a country home to supplement his Baltimore town home. An elegant yet relaxed Afternoon Tea is held on the last Thursday of every month (except July & August) from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oakland also hosts special winter teas on select Sundays January through March. Call for more information and reservations. 

Tea on the Tiber

          A recreation of a Victorian tea room of the 1850s, this charming establishment overlooks the Historic National Road in the Ellicott City. Tea on the Tiber features a Grand Parlor, The Sunroom, Squire's Office, The Library and weather permitting, a deck overlooking the Tiber River. Tea and foods served in the traditional English manner. Afternoon tea is offered Tuesday through Saturday, twice daily from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.


Eastern Shore

          Afternoon tea is provided for groups of 15-20 persons at the historic Meredith House, a Georgian-style mansion built in 1760 and currently the only historic home operated as a museum in Dorchester County. Hot tea and homemade delights are served by costumed docents. Operated by the Dorchester County Historical Society. 

Victoria Gardens Inn

          The British-born proprietor of this eighteenth-century bed & breakfast serves Afternoon or High Tea upon request. Afternoon tea (served between 2 & 4 p.m.) consists of miniature sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, cake and biscuits {cookies] as well as a variety of tea and sherry. High Tea is served around 6 p.m. and constitutes of a substantial meal for example, cornish pasties, Welsh rarebit-ham, beef or lamb on fresh bread and butter. Tarts, cake, pies, Pavlova, etc. are accompanied by tea and sherry.


The White Swan Tavern

          The warm brick façade and deep covered porch of the White Swan Tavern has been a landmark in downtown Chestertown since before the Revolutionary War. Afternoon tea is served daily between 3 to 5 p.m. in this colonial tea room in the charming historic district.  


Kent Manor Inn

          Traditional Afternoon Tea is served Thursday at 3:00 p.m. In addition to brewed tea of your choice, three courses are served. Start with traditional finger sandwiches prepared with European butter and delicious fillings, followed by homemade scones served with crème fraîche and jam, and finish with a variety of mini pastries. Compliment your dessert with a glass of champagne or special dessert wine. Special tea parties can be arranged by reservation.    

The Inn at Perry Cabin

          Gather at the Inn at Perry Cabin for tea every afternoon. Choose between Chesapeake Afternoon Tea or The Commodore’s High Tea featuring Chef Mark Salter’s tea sandwiches and tea infused vodka libations. Tea served daily from 3 to 5 p.m. in this manor house resort owned by Orient Express Hotels.

          Perched on the beach, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the verandah and the Atlantic Ocean, the Victorian Room Restaurant is an elegant and friendly place in which to take afternoon tea with cookies and crumpets; offered daily between 3 and 4 p.m. and complimentary for guests of the hotel. Each April, the Dunes Manor hosts an Anniversary Tea with special desserts including chocolate-covered strawberries and specially baked cakes.

          Enjoy tea under a magnificent chandelier in this circa 1897 Victorian mansion. The inn’s tea room, “Serendipi-Tea,” features over 60 varieties of fine loose teas and sweet treats. Parlor or porch seatings arranged from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays plus most Saturdays & Sundays. 

Serenity Tearoom

          Owner Blanch Henry’s interest in collecting tea cups began after her grandmother gifted a china pattern. Enjoy an elegant afternoon tea with tasty food, hospitable service and create your own fond memories. Serenity Tearoom’s retail shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call for reservations for Traditional Afternoon Tea and High Tea.           For over 125 years, this waterman’s home has stood on the tree-lined banks of Back Creek. Enjoy "Afternoon Tea at the Inn" open to the public, every third Thursday of the month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. High Tea is served in the dining room, Commons, front porch or in the beautifully landscaped gardens and includes a selection of three finger sandwiches and traditional scone 'n clotted cream and sweets that are reflective of the season. The teas are scheduled according to the reservations received; request 48 hours in advance. 


Royal Tea Room & Gifts

          The Royal Tea Room is located in the former rectory of Christ Episcopal Church. The house, built in 1929, has many charming attributes, including two dining rooms and a large front porch where, weather permitting, tea is served. Scones are baked daily and they offer a “princess tea” complete with a tiara for young ladies. Royal and Full tea served Tuesday-Saturday from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Sunday noon -4 p.m.; reservations recommended.

          This beautiful, historic 1840’s gentleman’s plantation bed & breakfast, located in historic St. Mary’s City, features a widely-acclaimed fine dining restaurant. Breakfast and afternoon tea are offered to guests. Metropolitan Tea Company loose teas are available. Formal teas are offered to the public several times throughout the year. Tea by request is available for groups of 20 or more.

          Period music and costumed docents add to the atmosphere of this 1867 Victorian home. Enjoy a cup of tea as you’re transported through time. In addition to special seasonally themed teas, the house also hosts Tea Socials, held the fourth Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each tea offers a different program and tea theme and requires advance registration.  

The Tea Cupboard

          This charming store specializes in loose tea and accessories. They stock over 100 varieties of Black, White, English Favorites, Green, Oolongs, Herbal and Rooibos teas. Offerings include teapots and cups made by local potter Lynn Lais, whose workshop is located in nearby Grantsville at the Spruce Forest Artisans Village at Penn Alps. Open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. 

Terra Angelica

          This historic bed and breakfast (homestead established 1790; house circa 1845) offers afternoon tea by reservation to groups. The property, located along the Historic National Road, also has a wellness center that specializes in mind-body-spirit programs. Ambitious guests may stroll the 247-acre grounds following tea.
