Best Western Grand Venice Hotel
Sep 25, 2014 by: Bruce G from Vineland, NJ, United States
Great staff, especially Michelle, who went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. Directions, restaurants, whatever we asked, she had an answer. Hotel is dated and could use a facelift. Was clean and everything worked, but was tired looking.
Pleasant and accommodating!!

I stayed at this Best Western because I love the Best Western brand and it was close to where I needed to be on business. The front desk receptionist at check in was very nice and made me feel welcome but unfortunately I forgot her name. As I went to the room, the general manager Viktor made sure to introduce himself and wished me a pleasant stay; very nice touch! My room was large and it was super comfortable and clean... but unfortunately my neighbors were kinda noisy (not the hotels fault). I would definitely stay here every time I'm in MD... Ohhh and I was very surprised to see they had a liquor store inside... I'm from California, so this is something I hadn't seen yet. :)

We stayed in the Best Western in Hagerstown for a Labor Day weekend. We got a great price for the night on priceline. The hotel is easy to find, the staff is very nice and professional. The rooms were spacious and clean with super comfy beds. Even though the bathroom seemed updated, the paint was a little worn out. Standard breakfast: cereal, coffee, juices, croissants, burritos, etc. If you are into hiking, the Appalachian trail is around 30 min away. Overall, we had a great stay. Recommend.
good place to stay

OK - I Guess - but Disappointing + Unwelcome Surprise

We stayed overnight at the "Grand" Venice on a trip South for a family function. The hotel advertised itself as having almost innumerable amenities and gives the impression (online) that it is, in fact, rather "grand". While it's certainly not poor, only the foyer gives a grand impression. Beyond that, the hotel was quite average and lacking in some respects - with an unwelcome surprise thrown in (see below). Room, though large, (bed large and comfortable) was clearly lacking in furniture. For example, there was no large comfortable single easy chair in which one could relax and read under a lamp. There was, however, an obvious, large space where such a chair should have been (obviously having been removed) and no lamp in that location to use either! Bathroom, though equipped with necessary amenities, appeared time-worn and clearly in need of some "sprucing up". Breakfast was adequate, fairly standard continental breakfast - not unusual, but sufficient. We also found fixtures unplugged so that I had to crawl behind the bed to plug in the lamp and clock, the coffee maker had to be unplugged in order to plug in the microwave/fridge, etc. This should all be adequately in order in any hotel - especially a grand one. However, our biggest surprise about the hotel was the note we found slipped under our door in the middle of the night. Fortunately, we were up fairly early, showered, had breakfast and were ready to leave shortly after 9:00 A. M. Pity the poor late riser who, that morning, envisioned a nice hot shower and a lazy breakfast before starting the day. What we assumed was a bill slipped under the door, was a note from the General Manager (Viktor) and Michele (Front Desk) that read, "Dear Guest - In an effort to improve our hotel, the main water pump will be turned off from 9 AM to 12 PM so that we can continue with updating our sinks and bathroom counter tops. We ask that you please have your baths/showers before or after that time. The showers by the pool will still be on, just in case you go swimming and need to rinse off. Thank you for your understanding." "Understanding"? We had no choice! This kind of information should be shared with guests the night before the planned shut-off so that guests can plan accordingly. When we spoke to Michele at the front desk at check-out time, she was very pleasant, polite, and apologetic while explaining that the "tile repairman" announced his work one week earlier than he was expected and the "fellow who comes in from outside to run the hair salon objected to a later shut-off time (as we suggested should have, at least, been done!) since he had customers scheduled to come in and 'What (he asked) could he tell them?' " This begs the question, does the hotel run for the convenience of travelers or for locals needing hair-dos? Not a bad place at a decent price, but we would certainly look at several other Hagerstown hotels first in the future - or drive a short distance South to Winchester, VA where hotels and nearby restaurants abound!
