With planning underway for the upcoming War of 1812 bicentennial, collaboration among Maryland stakeholders is essential. To stimulate partnerships, the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission is presenting a series of conferences to familiarize stakeholders with the many sites, stories, and organizations related to the War of 1812 in Maryland. Conferences have already taken place in Southern Maryland and Prince George’s County. The remaining conference will take place at the Head of the Bay, Eastern Shore, North Point and Baltimore over the next year.
Join us on December 10th at the Head of the Bay!
The day will begin at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum in Havre de Grace. Here attendees will learn about the War of 1812 and the 1813 British raids in the region from noted Maryland War of 1812 author Christopher George and Fort McHenry Ranger Jim Bailey. Attendees will then visit the Concord Point Lighthouse, near the location where John O'Neill courageously fought the British when they attacked Havre de Grace in May 1813. Attendees will then board the Lantern Queen for lunch and a river tour. The tour will then continue in Cecil County. Rodger’s Tavern, a historic structure once owned by Commodore John Rodgers will be the next stop followed by Principio Furnace, a manufacturer of cannons and ordinance that was burned by the British. The final site for the day will be Elk Landing, the site of Fort Hollingsworth where a chain was erected across the creek to keep the British vessels from reaching the port to attack.
