*Route avoids much of MD 77 and all of MD 66, which are high volume roads with little or no shoulders. Between Thurmont and Smithsburg, it is mountainous and remote, with long climbs and steep descents. Extreme caution should be used. Food and water are only available at Gettysburg, Emmitsburg, Thurmont, Smithsburg, Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.
**Route is extremely hilly, with steep climbs and descents. Roads are narrow with no shoulders, but have low traffic volumes. It uses some of the C & O Canal National Historic Park towpath and a pedestrian bridge to cross the Potomac River. Riders should be prepared to carrybicycles up the stairs to the pedestrian bridge. Food and water are only available at Harpers Ferry and Sharpsburg.
