Two re-enactments depict the Civil War’s Maryland Campaign – a Confederate invasion into Maryland that culminated in the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam. These large-scale re-enactments in Western Maryland are Sept. 8-9 and Sept. 14-16. A heritage festival in Sharpsburg, near Antietam National Battlefield, runs Sept. 15-16. View a detailed listing of these and other Civil War events marking the 150-year anniversary of the momentous Maryland Campaign.

Embrace the Chesapeake’s local culture. Take in the National Hard Crab Derby and Fair, Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31 – Sept. 2) at Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield – Maryland’s “Crab Capital.” The Maryland Seafood Festival runs Sept. 8-9 at Sandy Point State Park in Anne Arundel County. And, the Calvert County Watermen’s Festival is Sept. 23 at Solomons Island in Southern Maryland.

Witness re-enactments of how American militia confronted the British invasion during the War of 1812. Defenders Day at North Point (Fort Howard Park, Baltimore County) is an annual tribute to the “Old Defenders,” the heroes of the Battle of Baltimore. Fort McHenry’s Star-Spangled Banner Weekend, Sept. 7-9, recalls the all-night British bombardment of the fort and the penning of our national anthem.  On Sept. 22, a re-enactment and festival at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum salutes the Battle of St. Leonard Creek – the largest naval conflict in Maryland history.
