Oktoberfest spirit – Lederhosen: optional
In 1810, the crown prince of Bavaria married and a tradition began – Oktoberfest. The tradition is alive and well in Maryland.

Spirit of the vine – Raise a toast outdoors
The 15th annual Wine Fest on the Beach, Oct. 2-3 at Ocean City’s Inlet Park, presents live music, Eastern Shore cuisine, arts & crafts, and an array of East Coast winemakers, including eight Maryland wineries. Also on the Shore, the Autumn Wine Festival at Pemberton Historical Park in Salisbury, Oct. 16-17, showcases 22 Maryland wineries, musical entertainment and crafts-makers.

Autumn spirit – Natural splendor
Fall Harvest Days Jamboree, Oct. 2-3 at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, offers tractor and mule-pulled wagon rides, scarecrow-making, country food and crafts, live entertainment and a pumpkin contest. Garrett County in Western Maryland is an ideal place to bask in the colors of the autumn season. The Autumn Glory Festival, Oct. 6-10, blends magnificent scenery and regional culture with parades, concerts, arts exhibits, pumpkin mania, farmers’ market, even the Maryland State Banjo, Fiddle and Mandolin Championships.

Spirit of the bay – Seafood & maritime fun
Visit the state’s birthplace for the annual Blessing of the Fleet, Oct. 2-3 at Colton’s Point in St. Mary’s County. Tilghman Island Day Festival, Oct. 16 in Talbot County, is a day of crab-picking, oyster-shucking, boat races, docking contests, live music, and Maryland seafood. The Monster Rockfish Festival, Oct. 31 at Greenwell State Park in St. Mary’s County along the Patuxent, follows the first annual Monster Rockfish Tournament, Oct. 30. Festival features a Rockfish Cook-off, live music and tours of Rosedale Manor. |

Spirit of Nature – Call of the wild
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge hosts its annual open house, Oct. 2, with a bird and forestry walk, wildlife exhibits, refuge tours and “eagle prowls.” National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel presents its yearly Patuxent Wildlife Festival, Oct. 16 with live animals, interactive exhibits and research tours. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo in Thurmont presents its month-long Hibernation Celebration – an opportunity to see how animal kingdom takes its winter break.
