Make a trip to a Maryland garden the centerpiece of a Maryland getaway. Brookside Gardens (Montgomery County) is a 50-acre collection of public gardens. Ladew Topiary Gardens (Harford County) has two dozen “garden rooms” with exquisite topiary. And, Adkins Arboretum, on the Eastern Shore, has the region’s largest collection of native plants. A Toast to Frederick Wine Festival, April 21-22 at the Frederick Fairgrounds, is a salute to the Frederick  Wine Trail – a collection of seven wineries that account for more than half of Maryland’s wine production. Decanter, A Celebration of Maryland Wine & Racing, April 21-22 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, is a wine festival amid live racing. WineFest at St. Michaels, April 28, is a streetscape festival that spans this Eastern Shore town in the “Hamptons of the Chesapeake.”

Salisbury Festival, on the Eastern Shore, April 27-29, presents music, food, games and carnival rides. Free admission, parking. Event also offers beer tasting. Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Teas and the Arts, April 28 at Montpelier Mansion and Montpelier Art Center (Prince George’s County), features music, tours of mansion and galleries, crafts, games, and live animals. Rain or shine, free admission. Spring Craft Festival & Tractor Pull, April 28-29 at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds – also free admission – has crafts, pony rides, Teen Idol contest and tractor competitions.

Maryland’s steeplechase tradition – dating back to 1873 – enters a new season. My Lady’s Manor Steeplechase Races and Champagne Reception is April 14 at Ladew Topiary Gardens (Harford County). Enjoy a picnic in the countryside. In Baltimore County, Maryland Grand National runs April 21, and Maryland Hunt Cup is April 28. Maryland Junior Hunt Cup follows on April 29.

View Maryland’s Civil War heritage during a Civil War Walking Tour – hosted by Frederick County Museum of History – through downtown Frederick, April 7 and 21. Thunder on the Mountain is a demonstration of Civil War artillery, April 21-22, at Fox’s Gap, located at South Mountain State Battlefield. And, the University of Maryland presents a day of scholarly presentations, Women and the Civil War in Maryland, at the Hornbake Library in College Park, April 27.
