aryland offers plenty of quirky and unique experiences.The official state sport, after all, is jousting. In honor of John Waters' birthday (April 22), and the legacies of Edgar Allan Poe, Frank Zappa and Ogden Nash: think quirky, think unique. Visit the National Museum of Dentistry and the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore; the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick; Mountain City Traditional Arts Center in Frostburg; Calvert Marine Museum and Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center in Solomons; and the Ward Museum (wildfowl art) in Salisbury.

Civil War sesquicentennial
Baltimore, in April 1861, was a divided city -- in a divided state in a divided nation. Civil War 150: The Baltimore Commemoration, April 15-17, is a collection of city-wide events and exhibitions that mark the 150-year anniversary of the start of that turbulent era. It includes Maryland's Civil War Trails Expo at the Inner Harbor on April 16. Other Civil War events around the state:

Horse country
Maryland's first recognized steeplechase was run across the infield at Pimlico in 1873. The tradition continues. Ladew Topiary Gardens (Harford County) hosts My Lady's Manor Steeplechase Races and Champagne Reception, April 16. In Baltimore County the Maryland Grand National runs April 23, and the Maryland Hunt Cup is April 30. The Maryland Junior Hunt Cup follows on May 1.
