Governor receives national award for arts leadership
Americans for the Arts and the U.S. Conference of Mayors jointly named Gov. Martin O’Malley as one of three recipients of a 2013 Public Leadership in the Arts Award. The governor received the award at the Conference of Mayors’ annual winter meeting, Jan. 18 in Washington, D.C.

“I am honored to receive an award that recognizes (how) the arts continue to move Maryland forward," said Gov. O'Malley. "The arts support Maryland’s identity as a dynamic, cultural and vibrant place to live, learn and visit. But most of all, they have a significant economic impact on our state's economy, supporting jobs for Maryland families.”

The other two winners of the public leadership awards are David Coss, mayor of Santa Fe, N.M., and Mitch Landrieu, mayor of New Orleans. Gov. O’Malley previously won this award as mayor of Baltimore in 2004. He is the only public official to receive the award as both a mayor and governor.

In a letter supporting Gov. O’Malley’s nomination for this year’s award, Doug Mann, chair of Maryland Citizens for the Arts said: “While the governor has made difficult decisions necessary to balance the budget, he recognizes the critical role the arts play in the education of our children and the economic and cultural vitality of our state. Time and again he has shown the people of Maryland that a strong arts community is key to our quality of life and competiveness as a state.”

Recently, the Maryland State Arts Council released a study that showed how the state’s nonprofit arts sector generated $1 billion in economic impact for state and local economies, and supported more than 11,000 jobs with $399 million in salaries for Maryland residents.

U.S. tourism leaders elect Amelia as council officer
Margot Amelia, executive director of the Maryland Office of Tourism, was named vice chair of the U.S. Travel Association’s National Council of State Tourism Directors (NCSTD) at a recent meeting of U.S. Travel’s board of directors. NCSTD members nominate and elect their chair and vice chair.

Using the collective strength of tourism offices that represent all 50 states, the five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia, NCSTD strives to influence public policy while providing a leadership forum for discussing issues that impact tourism.

Amelia was also named co-chair of U.S. Travel’s 2013 Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations (ESTO), a national conference for regional, state and local tourism destination professionals. This year’s ESTO will be held Aug. 18-20 in Richmond, Va. Jennifer Carnam, vice president of marketing at the Richmond (Va.) Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau is the other co-chair.

Wreath-laying event launches Tubman commemoration
Relatives of Harriet Tubman – the prominent Underground Railroad conductor who was born on the Eastern Shore – will host a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tubman Memorial Garden in Cambridge (Dorchester County) on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. Located near the intersection of Route 343 (Washington Street) and Route 50 (across from Food Lion). The garden has a two-sided mural that depicts Tubman on one side and Stewart’s Canal on the other. It was painted by Charles E.T. Ross, one of the Tubman family members.

The ceremony is free and open to the public. Because space is limited, please RSVP by e-mail, or call 800-522-TOUR (8687) or 410-228-1000. A reception follows at New Revelation Baptist Church, 711 Bradley Ave. in Cambridge. This event kicks off the centennial commemoration of Tubman’s passing and Maryland’s observance of Black History Month.

Tourism Day features meetings with legislators
Tourism Day – presented by the Maryland Tourism Council and the Maryland Association of Destination Marketing Organizations – will be held Friday, Feb. 8 at the Miller Senate Building in Annapolis.

Leaders of the state’s tourism industry convene at this annual event in order to make their case to state legislators for tourism funding. The day includes a breakfast and issues briefing, meetings with legislators and a lunch that provides a forum for remarks by legislators. Last year, about 200 tourism professionals participated.

Governor’s proposed budget supports tourism marketing programs
Gov. O’Malley’s proposed FY14 Budget shows that both the Maryland Tourism Development Board and the Office of Tourism Development would see increases from FY2013, with $2 million allocation to support the State’s War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration, and $500K for targeted marketing activities.

Through a combination of general funds and augmented funds from advertising sales and other alternative funding sources such as Byways grants, the Governor’s proposed budget for the Maryland Tourism Development Board and Office of Tourism Development is $13.1 million, an increase from $12.6 million.

Tap into global market with CRUSA sales missions
Capital Region USA (CRUSA) – the regional destination marketing organization that promotes international travel to Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. – plans upcoming sales missions to Brazil and China. Participants in these missions will meet with tour operators and travel agents who send business to the U.S.

The Brazilian trip goes to Sao Paulo, Feb. 24-28, and costs $2,500 (not including flights and accommodations). Deadline for registration is Feb. 1. Brazil ranks as the fourth-largest overseas market for both the Capital Region and the U.S.

The Chinese trip goes to Beijing and Shanghai, April 21-28, and costs $3,500 (not including flights and accommodations). Deadline for registration is March 1. China is the second-largest overseas market for the Capital Region.

Riford selected as industry leader by national magazine
Tom Riford, president and CEO of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, was named one of the top leaders in the meetings and events industry by Rejuvenate magazine. Riford was the only Marylander among the 34 names that were submitted to the magazine by its industry partners across the U.S. Rejuvenate is a source of information for faith-based meetings, conferences, retreats and other events. It serves this industry through a magazine, web site and social-media network.

Maryland Arts Day brings advocates to Annapolis
Arts advocates from across the state will voice their support for Maryland arts funding during meetings with state legislators on Maryland Arts Day, Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Miller Senate Building in Annapolis. Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA), an advocacy group for Maryland artists and arts organizations, sponsors the annual event. Registration for Maryland Arts Day is available online. Dr. Charles Limb – a surgeon, researcher, teacher and musician associated with The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Peabody Conservatory – will address the advocates as the keynote speaker.
