Antietam Memorial Illumination

Candle-lit Battlefied
23,000 Candles - One for Each Soldier Killed, Wounded or Missing at the Battle of Antietam

Visit Antietam National Battlefield during this most somber yet beautiful event with the Memorial Illumination. More than 23,000 candles will be lit and lined up along the battlefield to pay tribute to the soldiers who were killed, wounded, or reported missing at the noteworthy Battle of Antietam. A five-mile drive through battlefield will reveal rows of candles to symbolize the lives that were lost that September day.

Driving tour begins 6PM on R. 34 east of Sharpsburg. In case of inclement weather, the Illumination will be rescheduled for Saturday, December 12, 2009.

This truly is one of the most stirring event to take place at the battlefield and is an experience the entire family will never forget!
