
Harriet Tubman Centennial
To mark 100 years since Harriet Tubman's passing, her homeland on Maryland’s Eastern Shore has launched a yearlong celebration of her life and legacy in 2013. Centennial events will happen throughout the year to remember this famed “conductor” of the Underground Railroad who led more than 70 enslaved people to freedom, served as a Civil War spy and nurse, and fought for women’s rights.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway – This 125-mile driving tour across Dorchester and Caroline Counties continues on through Delaware and features a number of interpreted wayside pull-offs, which showcase significant Tubman and Underground Railroad stories and events. Whether you have a couple of hours or a couple of days, there are many ways to enjoy the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. The Interactive Map and

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park – Located near the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, this park will be a major attraction and orientation point along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. Slated to open in 2015, the park will feature a visitor center with interactive exhibits, trails, a pavilion and Tubman memorial.
Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument
Established by President Obama on March 25, 2013, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument honors one of the nation’s greatest heroines. There is not a statue at this monument; instead, visitors can explore preserved landscapes that were once very important to Tubman as an enslaved child, young woman, freedom seeker, and successful Underground Railroad “conductor” in Dorchester County. The best way to explore the monument is via a driving tour of these sites on the
Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
