D.C.’s neighbor showcases history, art and entertainment

Just a quick Metro ride from Washington, D.C., is Montgomery County, home to numerous government agencies, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Institutes of Health and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Bethesda, which offers a full array of entertainment and dining choices, is the location of the 150-year-old National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world.

Outdoors enthusiasts can visit an Audubon Naturalist Society sanctuary or view the Great Falls of the Potomac River in the C&O Canal National Historic Park.

Rockville, the county seat of government since 1777, is Maryland’s fourth largest city. In Rockville, you’ll find exhibitions related to the lifestyles of the 18th and 19th centuries at the Beall-Dawson House and the Stonestreet Medical Museum.

Glen Echo is famous for its antique carousel. It’s also where Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, lived – and there is a historic site that chronicles her work.

The National Capital Trolley Museum, which offers streetcar rides, is in Wheaton. And in nearby Silver Spring, you’ll discover a revitalized arts and entertainment district, and the location of the American Film Institute’s restored Silver Theatre – originally built in 1938.
